When passing by the centennial chains that protect the historic center of Paraty, you enter into another era. It is like going back in time, but looking forward. The colonial mansions and the enigmatic symbols ornamented in its walls, as well as the beautiful churches of baroque influence, divide the limelight with artists’ studios from all around the world, contemporary restaurants, small bars with live music and coffee shops with tables on the cobblestone streets. Founded in 1667, Paraty is a national heritage. In its territory are the Serra da Bocaina National Park, the Environmental Protection Area of Cairuçu – where the village of Trindade is located -, the Ecological Reserve of Joatinga and it has a border with the Serra do Mar State Park.

You can visit stills and taste the famous cachaças – a kind of sugar cane brandy – direct from the barrels, enjoy a soul redemption bathing in the most beautiful waterfalls, experience the regional gastronomy and revive a bit of the city’s history by walking on the “Caminho do Ouro” (Gold Path), a road built by slaves between the XVII and XIX centuries, from the trails of the guaianazes indians which linked Minas Gerais to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. As a matter of fact, there’s an interesting fact about it: Paraty had the function of commercial warehouse, and because of its geographical position, was some kind of drain port for the gold production from Minas Gerais to Portugal. It was one of the most important port cities of the eighteenth century. In Paraty, the green from the rain forest makes the perfect combination with the blue from the ocean. You know those beaches that look like a screen saver? Here you have more than 50 of them in about 65 islands. As a matter of fact, you can call it a swimming pool, if you want: it has almost no waves and you can clearly see the bottom of the sea 4 or 5 meters down. It is wonderful when we are treated with the presence of distinguished visitors, such as dolphins and sometimes even turtles. Therefore, do not forget your mask, snorkel and flippers. Paraty is different. There is a magic in the air. You must live the charms of this city.
